i use Cinema 4d. that's pretty popular along with Maya and 3d Studio Max. i learned by going through the functions in the program and finding out what was possible. then i started practicing on making simple objects in simple environments. and that's pretty much where i still am :D
it's really satisfying since you don't need to be especially skilled to create stuff that impresses who don't know much about 3d ;)
